Here, the forest, a forest no longer necessarily in its pure form, perhaps even tamed, but at least it is accessible for everyone. This is an urban woodland, a so-called Stadtwald. In such a mixed forest, life bustles in all directions; not just foxes and hares, but humans too – foresters, loungers, joggers and dog walkers – are crossing paths, bidding each other goodnight.
People take care of their forest as best they can. Luckily, it exists: the air, the soil, perfect for a bit of Shinrin-yoku after work. Benches, gravel paths, bike lanes, signs and all the greens, nothing is lacking here.
On their walk, Mr. and Mrs. Adlaur happen to run into Mrs. Paulsen from the city administration, exchange a friendly greeting, and continue their leisurely stroll. What a wonderful forest bath, Mr. Adlaur muses. So peaceful, so idyllic, and best of all – no children. How lovely, thinks Mrs. Adlaur.
They come across a clearing, a man-made one, where an old and rather dilapidated Kunst-am-Bau (or perhaps more fittingly, Kunst-im-Wald) project stands: the Mundwerk. At its center, a long, blue-tiled walkway stretches out, depicting an enormous toothbrush. Surrounding it in a semicircle are trees, representing our teeth. Brilliant, such a clever nod to oral hygiene, Mr. Adlaur contemplates. Even the intervention by those young students from the university in Karlsruhe – the ones who added that board – doesn’t bother him. It’s nice to always have something new to look at.
But then, looking ahead, he notices a fallen branch, somewhat awkwardly positioned right in the middle of the path. Clearly an obstacle. That might bother other people. And if it bothers others, it bothers him. So, he quickly moves it aside. Everything else remains perfect.
Focused on his task, he doesn’t notice that shifting the branch sets off a chain of small movements on the clearing, right there at the board. Mrs. Adlaur, however, hears something. Maybe she even sees it. She points it out to her husband, but whatever it was, it’s already over. No proof remains.
Was it a coincidence? Just their imagination? Or perhaps a forest spirit?
Mr. and Mrs. Adlauer set off in search…

Hier der Wald, zwar nicht mehr unbedingt in seiner pursteen, ungezähmtesten Form, dafür ist er für alle da – als Citywald. In so einem Mischwald da geht es rund, drunter und drüber, nicht nur Fuchs und Hase, sondern eher Mensch, Förster*innen, Chiller*innen, Jogger und Dogger sagen sich gute Nacht.
Die Leute tragen so gut es geht Sorge zu ihrem Wald, zum Glück gib es ihn, die Luft, der Boden, perfekt für ein wenig Shinrin-yoku nach dem Feierabend. Sitzbänke, Rundkies, Radwege, Schilder, hier mangelt es an nichts.
Unterwegs zufällig Frau Paulsen von der Stadtverwaltung begegnet und freundlich begrüsst, spazieren Herr und Frau Adlaur gemütlich dem Weg entlang. Herrlich so ein Waldbad, denkt sich Herr Adlaur. So ruhig, so idyllisch, und ganz ohne Kinder, ach wie fein, denkt Frau Adlaur.
Sie kommen an eine Lichtung, eine mensch-gemachte, wo das "Mundwerk" steht, ein altes und ziemlich zerfallenes Kunst-am-Bau (oder vielleicht besser Kunst-im-Wald) Projekt. Zentral liegt ein länglicher, blau gefliester Steg, welcher eine riesige Zahnbürste darstellt. Im Halbkreis um das Objekt sind Bäume gepflanzt, die unseren Zähnen entsprechen. Genial, hier auf Mundhygiene zu verweisen, denkt Herr Adlaur. Und auch diese Intervention von so jungen, von der Uni da in Karlsruhe, die mit der Tafel, das stört ihn gar nicht, so gibt es immer was neues zu sehen.
Nur, jetzt wo er so nach vorne blickt, ein Ast liegt da schon etwas unglücklich, mitten im Weg eigentlich, das könnte andere Leute stören, also stört es ihn, Herr Adlaur, also das rasch auf die Seite tun. Sonst ist alles herrlich.
Herr Adlaur konzentriert sich auf sein Vorhaben, so bemerkt er nicht, das die Verschiebung des Astes weitere Bewegungen mit sich zieht, auf der Lichtung, an der Tafel. Frau Adlaur hingegen hat etwas gehört und vielleicht auch gesehen. Sie weist ihren Mann darauf hin, doch es lässt sich nicht mehr wiederholen, und so fehlt jeglicher Beweis.
War das ein Zufall? Oder nur Einbildung? Vielleicht doch ein Waldgeist?
