Setups are installations which investigate site-specific aspects, to then take part and intervene in their surroundings. By adapting found materials and present routines, movements are linked to places and objects. The series of works introduces resistance to our everyday - either subtle or crashing, in a sort of guerilla wellfare - to challenges our perception and expectation.

Setups kreieren Situationen, welche auf den ersten Blick gewöhnlich erscheinende Umgebungen in eine Wildnis des Sehens überführen. Die Interventionen sind so etwas wie kleine Versuchsstationen des Weltuntergangs, und folgen ihren eigenen Dynamiken. Es sind Abenteuer, die der Lethargie des Alltags einen Widerstand entgegen setzen, und dabei sowohl die Kulisse der Welt wie auch die Welt als Kulisse hinterfragen. Die Serie bildet das Fundament der künstlerischen Praxis, woraus zahlreiche Arbeiten mit unterschiedlichen Medien abgeleitet sind.
"Rafael begeistert sich für die Artefakte des Alltags. Er bearbeitet gefundene Gegenstände und transformiert sie, um unsere Seh- und Wahrnehmungsgewohnheiten zu hinterfragen. Im Ausstellungsraum zeigt der Künstler einen flach gedrückten Eimer, in dem eine orangegestrichene Leiste mit blauem Kantenschutz steckt. Diese lässt sich durch einen Mechanismus an der Seite des Eimers auslösen. Was fehlt, ist eine Handlungsanweisung. Somit bleibt das Verhältnis zwischen Objekt und Betrachtenden ein gespanntes: die skulpturale Anordnung kann verändert werden, sie muss aber nicht. Das Aargauer Kuratorium würdigt das in seiner Einfachheit bestechende skulpturale Objekt, das als humorvolles, disruptives Ready-made zwischen Zeichenhaftigkeit und möglicher Transformation schwebt."

Setups create situations that transform seemingly ordinary surroundings into a wilderness of seeing. These interventions are something like small experimental stations of the apocalypse, following their own inner dynamics. They are adventurous undertakings that resist the lethargy of everyday life, questioning both the world as a backdrop and the backdrop of the world.
The series represents the foundation of my artistic practice, as many works with different media, from sculptural objects to images, video and photographs have emerged as a result.
“Rafael is fascinated by the artefacts of everyday life. He works on found objects and transforms them in order to challenge our habits of seeing and perceiving. In the exhibition space, the artist presents a flattened bucket containing an orange-painted slat with blue edge protection. This slat can be released by a mechanism on the side of the bucket. What is missing is an instruction for use. As a result, the relationship between the object and the viewer remains a tense one: the sculptural arrangement can be altered, but it doesn’t have to be. The Aargauer Kuratorium commends this sculptural object, striking in its simplicity, which hovers as a humorous, disruptive readymade between sign-like quality and possible transformation.”
