Suddenly and omit knocking, really just like that, a colleague enters the studio. As the handle bends, the door starts moving and inadvertently touches a thin stick who was leaning there, causing it to start sliding along the wall. Its momentum grows and is finally passed onto other bars and sticks.
I was just about to.. anyways. As I stand there, able to do just nothing, watching myself being reduced to awkwardly gaze at what is about to go down. Frozen, the two of us. Well, I was about to tidy the place up, really. To late, several bars are now in a free fall, aiming straight at the table. Eventually, they impact on its edge and bounce in all directions. One stick gets tangled up with a chair, another one hits the shelf, taking down a tray, which was populated by an abundance of collected work-in-progress.
It is a concert now. The act concludes with a paper scroll rolling across the floor, leaving us in awe, gazing at the mess that now has gone quiet. Did I do that? Did I damage anything, this? Are you ok? Apologetic behaviour on both sides.
But this was good. A truly cathartic feeling was created, if only for a brief moment, when uncertainty reigned over things.
This incident serves as the inspiration and starting point for the Setup series. In particular, the first couple of interventions relate to this «happening».

Ohne anzuklopfen, einfach so in aller Plötzlichkeit, betritt eine Kollegin das Atelier. Der Türgriff neigt sich, die Türe schiebt sich vor, und mit ihr eine dünne Leiste, die dort nur ganz kurz zum verweilen angelehnt war. Die Leiste rutscht erst mit, dann ab, rattert entlang der Wand, wo sie an Momentum gewinnt und auf weitere Leisten trifft. Wie angewurzelt sehe ich ihr dabei zu.
Ich wollte eh gerade aufräumen, äh ja, so ein Pech. Jetzt ist es zu spät. Mehrere Leisten und Stäbe sind schon unterwegs, befinden sich im Fall, unaufhaltsam wie eine Lawine. Sie steuern direkt auf den Tisch zu, dreschen auf dessen Kante auf und springen zurück, verteilt in alle Richtungen.
Ein Stab verwickelt sich in einem Sessel, ein anderer trifft das Regal und nimmt einen der Böden mit, auf welchem verschiedene Gegenstände liebevoll und bedächtig angeordnet, ihren Platz hatten. Wiederum ein anderer Stab bleibt merkwürdig lange aufrecht stehen, in zufälliger Balance, als würde er den anderen zusehen wollen. Schliesslich klatscht er ungehalten auf den Boden, es peitscht.
Jetzt ist es ein Konzert. Die Sinfonie endet mit einer Papierrolle, welche sich quer durch den Raum entrollt. Die Kollegin und ich, wir stehen noch immer, bewundern das nun stillgewordene Chaos. Ehrfurcht vor dem Werk. War ich das jetzt? Ging was in die Brüche, was? Geht es dir gut? Gegenseitiges entschuldigen, bedauerlich das ganze.
Doch das war gut. Der kathartische Moment, als die Ungewissheit sich über alle Dinge legte.
Das beschriebene Ereignis stellt den Ausgangspunkt, quasi die Initialzündung zur Setup Reihe dar, worauf besonders die ersten Interventionen Bezug nehmen.
